What Is RTP in Slots? Return to Player and Volatility Explained

Learn what RTP really means, how it differs from volatility and hit frequency, and how to use both to pick slots that fit your play style.

· 2 min read

Every slot game lists an RTP — usually somewhere between 94% and 97%. It is one of the most quoted numbers in casino gaming, and also one of the most misunderstood.

What RTP means

Return to Player (RTP) is the percentage of all money wagered on a game that is paid back to players over a very large number of spins. A slot with 96% RTP is designed to return 96 units for every 100 wagered, averaged across millions of rounds.

The remaining 4% is the house edge:

house edge = 100% − RTP

What RTP does not mean

  • It does not mean you will get 96% of your money back in a session.
  • It does not change based on whether a machine is "hot" or "due".
  • Short sessions can land far above or below the RTP — that is normal variance.

Volatility: the other half of the picture

Two games with the same RTP can feel completely different. Volatility (or variance) describes how the RTP is paid out:

Volatility Wins Feels like
Low Small, frequent Longer sessions, steady balance
Medium Mixed Balanced
High Rare but large Big swings, long dry spells

Games like Gates of Olympus or Sweet Bonanza 1000 are known for high volatility, with most of their value concentrated in bonus features.

Hit frequency

Hit frequency is how often a spin returns any win. A 25% hit frequency means roughly one winning spin in four — even if many of those wins are smaller than the bet.

How to use this when choosing a game

  1. Prefer higher RTP when the choice is otherwise equal.
  2. Match volatility to your budget: smaller budgets last longer on low-volatility games.
  3. Set a session budget and time limit before you start.
